common questions

How long will I be in therapy?

If you are entering therapy for a specific problem, you may complete your therapeutic work in 8-10 sessions. Issues like anxiety or depression may take 3-6 months, depending on the severity of symptoms. Clients with certain diagnoses, like bipolar disorder or schizo-affective disorder, will most likely work with their therapist indefinitely, although the regularity of sessions may vary depending on the client’s current symptoms. I see most clients weekly and some every other week.

My partner and I are having problems. Should we be in individual or couples therapy?

Sometimes individual issues can be worked on more quickly in individual counseling. If those issues are a major factor in the couple’s relationship, it may help to at least begin with couples counseling in order to hear from the couple as a unit as to their current “state of the union.” There are instances where the counselor will refer one or both of the individuals to their own counselors in order to get to the heart of problems quickly, and then return to couples sessions to fine tune things like communication, solvable vs. perpetual problems, and knowing each other on a new level. I use the IFIO (Intimacy from the Inside Out) method for couples counseling. IFIO is based on Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS), and helps each member of the couple to explore their internal reaction from the past and how it plays out in the present.
